As we move toward the darker days of fall and winter, the seasonal changes remind us of the importance of slowing down in order to pause, rest and rejuvenate. Our challenge during the darker phase of the year is to not only embrace the darkness but also to bring light into the darkness. Our yoga practice offers us many ways of lifting our spirits and lightening up the dark days of autumn and winter.

During the deeper days of fall, the natural world reminds us of the important cycle of death and decay. The seeds are covered beneath layers of organic material, waiting in the darkness for the light and warmth to return. Leaves are turned into rich compost which will serve to nourish the plants and animals come spring. The work that we do during this time of the year is one of rest, self reflection and preparation for the next season of growth. Through the practice of yoga we are able to remove impurities at the physical and mental level while brightening our inner light of awareness so that we can better discriminate between that which serves our growth and that which does not.
